The president of Somaliland has held separate talks with his Israeli counterpart as well as Eric Trump, son of the former U.S. President, during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi emphasized the need to strengthen bilateral relations with both Israel and potential investors.
Abdullahi's discussions with Herzog revolved around enhancing ties between Somaliland and Israel, particularly following Israel's recent recognition of Somaliland as a sovereign state last month, a historic move after 35 years of Somaliland's declaration of independence from Somalia.
Eric Trump has reportedly shown keen interest in exploring the business prospects that Somaliland offers. Discussions during the meeting included investments in livestock and agriculture, which are pivotal sectors for Somaliland's economy, as the region seeks to industrialize and expand its exports.
Advisor Abdirahman Bayle noted that the talks signaled a shift in Somaliland's strategy; instead of soliciting aid from the international community, they are offering their resources for collaboration. The strategic location of Somaliland along key shipping routes enhances its appeal as a potential international trade hub.
Meanwhile, Israeli President Herzog expressed optimism regarding future cooperation, after showcasing a willingness to deepen relations. As Somaliland continues to navigate international politics and seeks development avenues, the involvement of influential business figures like Eric Trump could reshape its economic landscape.
Eric Trump's engagement, despite his lack of any formal government role in the U.S., is significant due to the business legacy of the Trump Organization. The parties involved continue to share their ambitions in the hopes of establishing a thriving partnership that could benefit both Somaliland and external investors.
