Background
The Order of Malta led a humanitarian convoy into the southern part of Lebanon, a region under Israeli occupation. BBC journalists were granted rare access to this area to cover the movement of aid to Christian villages that have been isolated due to ongoing hostilities.
Observations
The convoy's arrival on Thursday came a day before a new ceasefire was announced between Israel and Hezbollah. Reporters observed Israeli military forces on patrol but were restricted from filming most of the journey.
Israeli Claims
Israel stated it intends to maintain a security zone along the Lebanese border—free of Hezbollah—in order to protect northern Israeli communities from rockets and drones. This policy means Israeli troops will not withdraw from the area.
Humanitarian Impact
In the occupied territories, predominantly Shia villages have been completely destroyed by air strikes and demolitions. Human rights groups assert that the systematic destruction of civilian infrastructure could represent a war crime.
Reporting Team
BBC Middle East correspondent Hugo Bachega and video journalist Neha Sharma covered the story from southern Lebanon. Additional reporting was contributed by Samantha Granville and Angie Mrad.
