Trump's Withdrawal from International Climate Agreements
US President Donald Trump has withdrawn the US from dozens of international organisations, including many that work to combat climate change.
Among the 66 groups affected, nearly half are United Nations bodies, including the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, a key treaty for international cooperation aimed at addressing global warming.
The White House asserted the decision stemmed from a belief that these entities no longer serve American interests and instead promote ineffective or hostile agendas.
In line with past actions, Trump has previously reduced funding for multilateral organizations and dismissed the scientific consensus regarding man-made climate change as a hoax.
The withdrawal memorandum, signed on Wednesday, was part of a review the White House conducted regarding what it deemed a waste of taxpayer dollars.
Stating that these withdrawals would halt American taxpayer funding towards organizations that support globalist agendas over U.S. priorities, the White House commented on the adverse implications of these entities, stating they promote radical climate policies and ideas conflicting with US sovereignty.
Included in the withdrawal were groups like the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which is crucial for evaluating climate science globally, alongside other organizations focused on peace, democracy, and health.
The US Constitution allows presidents to join treaties contingent on Senate approval but is ambiguous regarding withdrawal, which raises potential legal complexities.
A representative from the Union of Concerned Scientists described the withdrawal as a new low, suggesting it signifies an administration approach detrimental to public welfare and global collaboration by prioritizing authoritarian and anti-science agendas.
Last year, Trump withdrew the US from the Paris Agreement, a pivotal framework for addressing climate change, and declined to participate in the COP30 climate summit in Brazil.
