Israel has carried out air strikes on Syrian government infrastructure in southern Syria, specifically targeting military facilities in response to what the Israeli military described as attacks on Druze civilians in Suweida province. The strikes were stated to have hit a command center and weapon storage sites overnight.
In its statement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) asserted that it 'will not tolerate harm towards the Druze population in Syria and will continue to operate to defend them.'
The Syrian foreign ministry, reacting to the strikes, denounced them as 'an outrageous assault on Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity,' claiming that Israel's justification for the attacks is based on flimsy pretexts.
These developments unfold amid escalating violence in Suweida, composed predominantly of Druze inhabitants, where clashes between government forces and local armed groups have intensified. Reports indicate that violence erupted after bombardments affected areas held by Druze factions.
In response to the recent attacks, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned of further military actions, implying that Israel would respond more forcefully if the Syrian government continued to target Druze communities.
