FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — The FBI reported that a suspicious package discovered outside a gate at MacDill Air Force Base contained “possible energetic materials.” This announcement came during an ongoing investigation regarding the package, found near the base's Visitor Center.

The FBI Tampa stated that an analysis of the materials is still pending, emphasizing their focus on the safety and security of the installation while providing no additional information. Energetic materials can include explosives or propellants, raising concerns about potential threats.

Following a received threat, MacDill Air Force Base had enacted a shelter-in-place order, which was lifted after about two hours. The security measures implemented remain undisclosed as officials continue to monitor the situation closely.

The alertness at MacDill has heightened recently due to regional instability, notably the ongoing war tensions in Iran. The U.S. Central Command, essential for military operations across the Middle East, Central Asia, and parts of South Asia, operates from this base. Serious efforts have been made to maintain vigilance, with directives encouraging personnel to report any suspicious activities immediately.

In a related note, recent military activities have already resulted in the loss of six crew members of a KC-135 refueling aircraft, further emphasizing the need for caution and preparedness at military installations.
