In a brutal and unprecedented escalation of attacks, Russia launched more than 700 drones and missiles at Ukraine overnight, resulting in a tragic toll of at least 18 deaths across various cities, including the southern port city of Odesa and the capital, Kyiv. This attack is reported to be the deadliest in months for Ukraine.
Among the casualties, nine individuals died in Odesa, while five were killed in Dnipro, and the capital, Kyiv, saw four fatalities, including a 12-year-old boy. Explosions jolted residents awake in the early hours of Thursday as air raid sirens echoed, signaling the onset of chaos.
Images from eyewitnesses captured the horrifying aftermath of the strikes, with vivid flames and towering plumes of smoke emerging from urban areas. A residential building in Kyiv was shown collapsing after a drone impacted the structure, further compounding the devastation.
In Dnipro, local authorities confirmed initially four deaths, with numbers expected to rise as search and rescue operations continue. Meanwhile, reports indicated a drone strike in Kharkiv injured two elderly residents.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned Russia's actions, stating that such aggression underlined the importance of maintaining stringent sanctions on Moscow from Western nations. Zelensky's remarks come amidst warnings of a critical shortage of air defense missiles in Ukraine, where Patriot systems are essential to intercepting ballistic threats.
This recent violence came shortly after a brief ceasefire for Orthodox Easter, which both sides reportedly violated numerous times. As the conflict, now in its fifth year, approaches a critical juncture, Ukraine seeks renewed support from allies, pressing for economic stability alongside military aid.
Further complicating the situation, a Ukrainian drone attack in Russia's Krasnodar region resulted in casualties there, indicating the relentless nature of the ongoing fighting.
The humanitarian ramifications are dire; beyond the immediate loss of life, infrastructure damage across affected cities has left many without essential services and power, raising urgent calls for international support and intervention.
