DENVILLE, N.J. — In a decisive victory for the Democratic Party, Analilia Mejia has won the special election for the U.S. House of Representatives in New Jersey, defeating Republican Joe Hathaway. Her campaign was centered around challenging President Donald Trump's administration and promoting progressive policies.

Mejia, who previously led the Working Families Alliance and received support from prominent figures like Vermont U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, will fill the seat once occupied by Democratic Gov. Mikie Sherrill until January.

This victory ensures the Democratic hold on the 11th District, which had been a Republican stronghold in the past, adding to the party's string of successes as the midterm elections near. The Associated Press called the election for Mejia just moments after polls closed.

In her campaign, Mejia framed the election as a referendum on Trump’s leadership, criticizing his actions surrounding the January 6 insurrection and his handling of federal funds. “The people here are ready to do something about it,” Mejia asserted. “We’re not here to write strongly worded letters. Congress has real power.”

While Hathaway attempted to leverage Mejia's progressive platform against her, labeling her as a socialist, she remained undeterred. In a recent statement, Hathaway emphasized his aim to bring “common-sense leadership” to Washington, advocating for pragmatic solutions over what he termed a “far-left agenda.”

As the two may potentially face off again in the upcoming November election for a full two-year term, the campaign landscape suggests a rising engagement from progressive voters in the region.

The 11th District includes parts of Essex, Morris, and Passaic counties and has shifted towards Democratic alignment since Trump's first term. Sherrill, who initially secured the seat in the 2018 midterms with a significant victory margin, previously maintained this Democratic momentum with a 15-point re-election win in 2024.

Some district residents have expressed their concerns about the political leanings, with one voter commenting on the need for congressional representatives who prioritize helping people over divisive policies. Mejia's progressive stance, particularly advocating against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, has become a focal point of her appeal.

In addition to her victory, Mejia's alliances with figures such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Elizabeth Warren highlight her standing within the Democratic Party. Meanwhile, Hathaway's credentials as a former athlete and political aide show the election dynamics as both candidates prepare for an intense political future.
