Pro-Palestinian activists reported that Israeli forces intercepted a flotilla of over 50 boats carrying aid for Gaza in international waters near Cyprus. The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) characterized the boarding as 'another illegal, high-seas aggression,' capturing the incident on a live video stream that showed commandos storming the vessels.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded by stating that the raid effectively neutralized a plan aimed at disrupting the isolation of Hamas in Gaza. This is not the first interference with this flotilla, as last month Israeli forces intercepted a similar group near Crete, detaining 181 activists before releasing most but two, who were later deported.
The flotilla had set sail from the Turkish port of Marmaris, carrying over 460 activists from 45 countries with the intention of delivering humanitarian supplies, including food and medical aid to the Palestinian territories. The activists claim that the conditions in Gaza remain dire, with many citizens living under challenging circumstances after ongoing conflict.
In response to the latest interception, Turkey condemned Israel's actions as piracy, while activists called for international support to halt these actions and protect what they described as a legal humanitarian mission. This incident underscores the continuing tensions surrounding the Gaza blockade and international humanitarian efforts, amidst conflicting narratives between Israeli authorities and pro-Palestinian advocates.
