Recent verified photographs have emerged showing a severely damaged US E-3 Sentry aircraft at the Prince Sultan air base in Saudi Arabia. The aircraft appears to have been split in half as a result of an Iranian military attack. Images, first circulated by a Facebook page dedicated to US military news, have been matched with satellite imagery confirming their authenticity.

The US Central Command has yet to comment on the incident officially, but reports indicate that at least 12 US military personnel sustained injuries during the attack, with two being classified as serious. Notably, the Iranian news agency linked to the country’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed that a Shahed drone was responsible for striking the aircraft.

This comes on the heels of a recent aerial reconnaissance, which captured images of an E-3 aircraft in the same location on March 11. Flight-tracking data shows the aircraft was operational in proximity to the air base as recently as March 18.

The E-3 AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System), developed from the Boeing 707 platform, plays a critical role in military operations by monitoring airspace and tracking targets, thus providing crucial information to commanders concerning air defense and surveillance. Despite being introduced into service in 1977, the aircraft is expected to remain in the operational fleet until at least 2035.
