Zimbabwe says that 15 of its nationals have been killed after being recruited to fight for Russia in its ongoing war with Ukraine, with more than 60 still trapped on the frontlines.
Information Minister Zhemu Soda noted that these individuals were lured by shadowy agencies offering lucrative jobs overseas, primarily using social media platforms.
It is a sophisticated scheme of deception, exploitation, and human trafficking that has already resulted in the loss of Zimbabwean lives, he stated.
The Zimbabwe government claims it is in talks with Russian authorities to ensure the repatriation of the deceased and the safe return of those still alive.
This is the first public acknowledgment by Zimbabwe of its nationals' involvement in military service for Russia.
Soda urged Zimbabweans to exercise caution with job offers abroad, advising them to verify opportunities through official channels, as many recruiters vanish after a recruit is injured or captured.
The situation mirrors similar patterns across Africa, with citizens from countries like Kenya, Ghana, and South Africa also being lured into combat for Russia. A Ukrainian intelligence report estimates over 1,700 Africans from 36 countries have joined the fight for Russia.
Recent estimates indicate that 252 Kenyans have been illegally conscripted, prompting their Foreign Minister to visit Moscow to address the issue. Meanwhile, Ghana has confirmed the deaths of 55 of its citizens in the conflict, alongside reports of others being recruited.
As the crisis unfolds, the Zimbabwean government continues to strive towards ensuring the safety and return of its nationals caught in the turmoil.
