Downing Street has asserted that the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands 'rests with the UK', following a report that the US may reconsider its position on British claims to the territory.

The Pentagon's internal email, initially reported by Reuters, included suggestions for potential retaliatory actions against allies the US feels have failed to support its operations in Iran.

In response to this development, a spokesman from No 10 remarked: 'The Falkland Islands have overwhelmingly voted in favour of remaining a UK overseas territory. We stand firm on the islanders' right to self-determination, and sovereignty remains with the UK.'

BBC News has not been able to verify the content of the Pentagon email.

The spokesman added that the government 'could not be clearer' about its position and that 'sovereignty rests with the UK, and the islanders' right to self-determination is paramount.'

'We have communicated this stance clearly to successive US administrations, and nothing will change that,' he reiterated.

The UK government has reached out to the Pentagon for clarification regarding the reported email.

A review concerning the Falkland Islands was one of several possible measures suggested, including the US considering the suspension of Spain from NATO due to its strong opposition towards the conflict in Iran.

A NATO official informed the BBC that the alliance's founding treaty 'does not foresee any provision for suspension of NATO membership or expulsion.'

Previously, Spain's Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, commented, 'We do not operate based on emails. We base our efforts on official documents and the positions taken by the US government.'

The Falkland Islands, located in the south-west Atlantic Ocean, are a British overseas territory and remain the center of a longstanding sovereignty dispute between Britain and Argentina.

The situation escalated in 1982 when Argentina's military dictator, Leopoldo Galtieri, ordered an invasion of the islands, leading to a 10-week conflict where the UK dispatched a naval task force to reclaim them. Argentine forces ultimately surrendered, yet Argentina continues to assert its claim over the Falklands, which it refers to as the Malvinas and which are situated about 300 miles off its coast.
