Recent announcements reveal that hundreds of National Guard troops stationed in major cities such as Chicago and Portland are being sent home. The decision comes amid ongoing court challenges concerning their deployment by the Trump administration, marking a significant shift in military operations within these regions.
According to a defense official, the withdrawal is part of a broader reassessment of troop deployments that began following Trump's crackdown on immigration in Democratic cities. U.S. Northern Command conveyed that while troops are withdrawing, a reduced presence will remain to ensure continual operations.
In the coming days, nearly 200 California National Guard troops stationed in Oregon will return home while about 100 will remain in the area for training. Similarly, around 200 Texas National Guard personnel in Chicago are also scheduled to return, with some remaining on standby at Fort Bliss.
Despite the withdrawal, approximately 300 Illinois National Guard members will stay in the Chicago area for training. However, they currently lack the legal capacity to conduct operations under the Department of Homeland Security.
The upcoming holiday season may have influenced the decision to scale back military presence, as noted by officials. Advocates for civilian oversight, including California Governor Gavin Newsom's spokesperson, have criticized the initial deployment, asserting it was unlawful.
Democratic-led cities targeted for military presence have been vocal in their opposition, claiming the deployments breach states' rights and lack a legitimate legal basis. Ongoing litigation in Portland has resulted in court injunctions prohibiting troop deployments, further complicating these military operations.
The National Guard's engagement in such domestic missions has sparked widespread debate, particularly under Trump's administration, which has expanded military use to address domestic concerns such as immigration control and civil unrest. Moving forward, while some troops will remain, legal and operational limitations continue to frame the context of their deployment.
