South African midfielder Jayden Adams has died aged 25.
Adams featured in all three of South Africa’s group games at the 2026 World Cup, helping the team reach the knockout stages for the first time before losing to co‑host Canada in the round of 32.
"It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learned of the passing of Jayden Adams," said South Africa’s minister of sport, arts and culture Gayton McKenzie. "South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents, and we mourn alongside his family, his teammates and the millions of supporters who watched him grow from a promising academy prospect into a full Bafana Bafana international.”
Police opened an investigation after a body was found at a house in Schotschekloof, a suburb of Cape Town. The cause of death has not yet been confirmed, and authorities urged restraint and compassion during the inquiry.
Adams began his professional career with Stellenbosch FC before signing for Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025, where he collected both league and African Champions League titles. He also helped South Africa reach the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations semi‑finals.
"Jayden had only recently represented the country at the World Cup, carrying the nation’s hopes with pride and purpose," the South African Football Players Union said. "His loss is immeasurable to everyone involved in the sport.”
