Fatal Outbreak of Malaria at Frankfurt Airport

A rare incident of malaria at Germany’s busiest airport has claimed the life of one worker after six employees were infected by mosquitoes that arrived on a departing flight. The perpetrating mosquitoes are suspected to have been transferred from another airport by an aircraft, according to the Regional Health Authority.

Officials say all six infected workers are being treated; the remaining five are in stable condition. The airport operator, Fraport, has installed mosquito traps around the tarmac and is sending captured insects to a laboratory to determine species and origin.

Fraport spokesperson, Linda Märk, told BBC News, “We can confirm a death has occurred as a result of this infection. We have provided all employees with comprehensive information and encourage anyone who experiences symptoms to seek medical advice immediately.”

The outbreak is under investigation by the Frankfurt Public Health Department. Scientists are analysing blood samples to determine whether the workers were bitten by a single mosquito or by multiple insects.

While malaria cases in Germany are usually reported among long‑haul travellers who have visited endemic regions, the German federal institute Robert‑Koch‑Institute notes that “airport malaria” is extremely uncommon and that any lack of travel history can delay diagnosis, increasing the risk of severe disease.

The last airport‑borne malaria case in Germany was reported at Frankfurt in 2023. The World Health Organization emphasises that malaria is preventable and curable, but not transmissible between people. Symptoms may be mild or life‑threatening, underscoring the importance of early detection and treatment.

The incident highlights the vulnerability of airports to vector‑borne diseases that can be transported via aircraft. It has prompted the aviation industry to re‑evaluate mosquito control measures at airports, including increased surveillance, trap deployment, and staff education.
