World’s Youngest Traditional Monarch, King Oyo, Dies at 34

King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who ascended to the Tooro throne at just three years old, has died aged 34.

The 13th monarch of a dynasty founded in the early 19th century was also listed by Guinness World Records as the world’s youngest reigning monarch, ruling over more than two million inhabitants before his untimely death.

While the Tooro kingdom did not publicly disclose the cause of death, a Ugandan government minister reported that Oyo had been critically ill and seeking treatment in the United States.

The Tooro Prime Minister, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, described the loss as “immeasurable” and called for unity and prayer among the people of Tooro and the royal family. He also announced that the Crown will be passed to a Prince, whose identity will be formally revealed later in accordance with traditional customs.

During his reign, Oyo was respected for endorsing youth empowerment, education, climate conservation and HIV/AIDS awareness. The Buganda Kingdom, Uganda’s largest traditional institution, mourned the passing and honored him as a valuable figure in Ugandan culture.

The Tooro Kingdom follows a hereditary system for selecting its monarch, and a regency—led by the queen mother—was in place until Oyo was formally crowned at age 18 in 2010.
