Human Skeletons Surface in US Reservoir as Drought Lowers Lake Mead Levels
Potential human remains, including a jaw with teeth still attached, were recovered from the largest reservoir in the United States. The US National Park Service says the bones were reported by visitors at Boulder Beach on Lake Mead, Nevada, on Aug. 16.
National Park Service rangers and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department responded to the scene, the service stated, and the incident “remains under investigation.” As the reservoir falls below its long‑term record low, shoreline exposure has suddenly revealed skeletal fragments that could belong to a missing person or a historical burial site.
Lake Mead is the largest reservoir in the United States, spanning Nevada and Arizona. Since 2000, its levels have steadily declined due to persistent drought driven in part by climate change. Officials quoted the US Bureau of Reclamation, saying the water level dropped to 1,040 feet (316 m) above sea level last week—below the previous record low set in July 2022.
The discovery follows a pattern of water‑level‑driven revelations: for example, earlier this year in Hungary, bodies of World War II German soldiers were found in the Danube River as its levels dropped, and in the UK, the remains of a flooded village were uncovered in Rutland. Across the globe, many other sites have yielded new archaeological or forensic findings whenever climate‑induced droughts expose buried elements.
Locals Sophie Molina Cruz and her friend Noel De Leon, who spotted the jaw while exploring the area, highlighted how the water’s retreat is unearthing remnants that would otherwise remain submerged. “The water looks very low compared to where it should be,” De Leon said, adding that as the water recedes, skeletons are more likely to surface.
The National Park Service is working with forensic teams to determine the origin of the remains, under the guidance of the Department of Justice and the Nevada State Health Department. A definitive conclusion remains pending.
