In brief
On February 14, 2025, a fire erupted at the almost-finished Banyan Tree resort, quickly overwhelming rescue efforts and leading to numerous casualties.
On Friday, a disaster struck during the construction of the Banyan Tree resort in South Korea's southeastern port city of Busan, resulting in the loss of at least six lives and injuries to 25 others, as reported by fire officials. The fire broke out around 10:50 a.m. local time in the swimming pool area located on the ground floor of the 12-story building. Fire Chief Hong Moon-sik from Gijang County indicated that the rapid spread of flames was exacerbated by dark smoke that engulfed the building, making evacuation nearly impossible for many.Among the deceased, six individuals were discovered unconscious in the pool area, where flammable insulation materials ignited, resulting in thick black fumes. The injured victims were located throughout the facility, which includes three basement levels in addition to the upper floors. Emergency responders managed to rescue 14 people from the roof after the flames engulfed the structure. Firefighters eventually brought the situation under control by 1:30 p.m. that day.A significant force of firefighters, alongside over 120 fire trucks, was mobilized to battle the blaze, but Chief Hong pointed out that the high casualty rate resulted from the extensive spread of the fire before rescuers could arrive. The investigation into the fire's cause is currently underway. The luxury hotel, developed by the Singapore-based Banyan Group, was projected to open this year, with construction nearing completion prior to the tragic events. This incident remains a developing story, with updates expected as further information becomes available.
