In brief
A powerful 7‑meter earthquake struck the Baqên County of Tibet’s Nagqu region on Thursday night, taking the lives of at least 16 residents and leaving 32 injured. The quake caused the collapse of more than 300 homes and extensive rockfalls that closed key roads, hampering rescue operations. Emergency services declared a regional emergency and deployed teams amid widespread power outages. This disaster follows severe floods and landslides in the area that claimed over 1,400 lives about two months ago.
A 7‑sized earthquake struck the mountainous Baqên County in Tibet’s Nagqu region on Thursday night, killing at least 16 people and injuring 32 others, Chinese state media reported.
The epicentre lies 400 km north‑east of Lhasa. Officials said the quake collapsed more than 300 homes, and rockfalls forced roads in the vicinity to close, making it difficult for rescue teams to reach affected villages.
Authorities have declared a regional emergency and deployed emergency management crews, although power outages and damaged infrastructure have hampered relief efforts.
The disaster comes shortly after massive floods and landslides that shook Tibet and Nepal two months earlier, when a glacier collapse triggered catastrophic weather events that killed over 1,400 people and left hundreds missing.
