In brief

Storm Adam brought record‑borne rainfall to southern France, killing four and injuring one. Floodwaters cut off towns, stalled trains and trucks, and forced dozens into emergency shelters in the Bouches‑du‑Rhône region. While emergency services handle the crisis, officials warn that Storm Austen may bring even stronger winds to the north‑west. The incident echoes Spain’s own losses, where the storm has already claimed lives along the Mediterranean coast.

Deadly floods in Bouches‑du‑Rhône

At least four people have been killed in southern France after Storm Adam unleashed heavy rainfall across the region. A second victim, an 86‑year‑old woman, and a 26‑year‑old woman were found drowned in a cellar in the Bouches‑du‑Rhône area. A 4×4 vehicle was swept from a road in Corsica, killing one of its occupants while another escaped through a window. Police have yet to confirm the details of the fourth fatality.

The deluge quickly turned streets into rivers, disrupting road and rail transport. Local emergency shelters in the towns of Mouriès and Saint‑Martin‑de‑Crau housed dozens of residents, and authorities reported one injury in the area.

Transport and Infrastructure Impact

Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot urged the public on X to avoid routes crossing the flood‑affected zones, noting that water levels had reached unprecedented heights. Prefect Jacques Witkowski said the department was mobilised at an exceptional level to address the crisis.

Storm Austen: A Ray of Brighter Damage Next

Météo‑France has issued an orange‑level wind warning for the north‑west from Côtes‑d'Armor to Manche. Storm Austen is expected to bring strong winds that could aggravate already battered infrastructure.

Cross‑Border Response in Spain

Storm Adam has also claimed lives in eastern Spain, where rescue teams have recovered bodies from floodwaters in Valencia and beyond. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez pledged national support for reconstruction efforts, and the Valencian government approved a €23.5 million aid package for affected citizens.

As the storm continues to batter the Mediterranean, emergency services across France and Spain are on high alert, reinforcing the importance of advanced weather modelling and rapid data analytics to anticipate and mitigate such natural disasters.
