Trump Blames Iran for Downing US Helicopter, Calls for Response
President Donald Trump has publicly accused Iran of shooting down a U.S. Army Apache helicopter over the Strait of Hormuz and vowed that the United States will “respond by necessity.” The statement was shared on Trump’s Truth Social account, adding that the two pilots were safe and uninjured but that the incident demanded a U.S. response.
According to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the crew were rescued by a U.S. sea drone operated by Task Force 59. The drone, launched from Bahrain in 2024, extracted the soldiers from the wreckage and transferred them to a helicopter for further transport. The operation involved U.S. Naval Forces Central Command, the 82nd Airborne Division, the Air Force, and the Navy’s 5th Fleet.
The incident arrives amid escalating tensions: Israeli forces have recently carried out strikes across southern Lebanon, prompting Iran to warn of retaliatory strikes. Tehran has not yet issued a formal response to Trump’s claims. Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi cautioned foreign forces near Iranian territory about risks of accidental or crossfire engagements.
Trump’s remarks coincide with comments urging Israel and Iran to cease hostilities. He warned that an “immediate ceasefire” would be jeopardised by “ignorance or stupidity.” The president also hinted that a nearing agreement with Tehran could lift the Strait of Hormuz to commercial traffic once the deal’s final条环. However, the shooting of the helicopter may pressure the U.S. to act, potentially destabilizing the fragile ceasefire that has been in place since April.
As the situation unfolds, Washington monitors the conversation between Tehran and its negotiating counterparts. Current U.S. actions remain unclear, while Iranian leaders have signaled their willingness to shift from diplomatic language to “other languages” should any party break commitments. The Middle East watches closely as the world hopes for a swift resolution to avoid a broader conflict.
