US forces struck five Iranian oil tankers on Tuesday, sinking one, in response to Tehran’s missiles targeting a U.S. base in Jordan.
Four oil tankers linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps were hit in the Gulf of Oman, while a fifth was attacked near the strategic Kharg Island terminal, a major hub for Iranian crude exports.
In retaliation, Iran fired missiles at the U.S. base, of which Jordan shot down 18 of 20. Iran also claimed attacks on two U.S. vessels and eight tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.
These tit‑for‑tat strikes mark a heightened phase of confrontation more than six months after U.S. and Israeli strikes on February 28, prompting a noticeable rise in Asian and U.S. oil prices.
U.S. officials noted the seized U.S. underwater drone had been defective, but it was part of ongoing maritime surveillance operations in the region.
