On April 19th, eight children, aged from one to 14 years old, were tragically killed in a shooting incident in Shreveport, Louisiana. Police are labeling the event as a domestic disturbance.
The shooting occurred around 5:00 AM local time (10:00 AM BST) when a single assailant opened fire, injuring ten individuals in total. The suspect was tracked and shot dead by police while attempting to flee.
Mayor Tom Arceneaux expressed the city's grief: We have hurting families, we have hurting police officers, coroners' personnel. This affects the entire community, so we all mourn with these families.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the gunman or the victims; however, they noted some of the deceased children were related to the shooter.
This is a tragic situation - maybe the worst tragic situation we've ever had in Shreveport, the mayor added, urging the community to pray for those affected.
The police disclosed that the shootings spanned multiple locations, including two homes on the same block and a third nearby. Officers were dispatched to a residence shortly before 6:00 AM, where they discovered the victims.
Shreveport Police Corporal Chris Bordelon confirmed that all deceased were juveniles and stated that the incident was classified as domestic in nature. One person shot at the home reportedly fled to another nearby residence.
Following the shooting, the gunman carjacked a vehicle to escape but was pursued by police officers into another neighborhood, where he was ultimately confronted.
Police Chief Wayne Smith conveyed his sorrow for the community, saying, I just cannot begin to imagine how such an event can occur. The investigation is being conducted in close cooperation with the Louisiana state police and other agencies.
We are going to be working diligently however long it takes to get some answers to what has taken place, Smith assured.
