Psychiatric Defence to Shape Luigi Mangione’s State Murder Trial

In a recent hearing, Luigi Mangione’s counsel informed Judge Gregory Carro that the defense will argue the defendant was suffering from extreme emotional disturbance at the time of the shooting that killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

Mangione has pleaded not guilty in both federal and state proceedings. A federal murder and firearms case against him was dropped earlier this year, but federal stalking charges remain on the docket, carrying a possible life‑sentence penalty.

The judge announced that court records detailing the psychiatric defence will be unsealed, allowing public scrutiny of the evidence and strategy used by the defense team. If the jury finds the defendant’s state of mind at fault, the outcome could shift from murder conviction to manslaughter.

The incident came on 4 December 2024 when Thompson was shot from behind while attending an investor conference at a Manhattan hotel. Mangione, a graduate of an Ivy League institution from a wealthy Maryland family, faces a September 8 opening for the state trial.
