The bodies of two Italians who drowned in a scuba diving accident in the Maldives last week have been brought to the surface, local officials have reported. They were retrieved from the third chamber of the underwater cave by the specialist divers from Finland after a two-hour operation, Mohamed Hossain Shareef, a Maldivian government spokesperson, confirmed.
The two bodies are now being transported to the capital Male for identification. They were part of a group of five divers who tragically died in the accident. The first body of an Italian diver named Gianluca Benedetti, a boat operations manager and diving instructor, was recovered soon after the accident occurred near Vaavu Atoll.
The operation faced significant challenges, including rough weather conditions that led to a yellow warning for passenger boats and fishermen. The Finnish divers worked closely with local police and coastguard, successfully retrieving the two bodies to a depth of 30 meters before the coastguard took over the remaining operation.
The ongoing search and recovery missions have also drawn attention to the guidelines followed during these deep-sea dives. The team involved, which included researchers from the University of Genoa, proceeded with the dives without explicit authorization for cave diving, sparking scrutiny from officials and the public.
Authorities have indicated that the search for the remaining two bodies will continue, with hopes of uncovering more information regarding the circumstances surrounding the tragic event. The underwater cave, known locally as shark cave, presents unique challenges due to its depth of up to 60 meters.
