A devastating collision between a minibus and a lorry in South Africa has resulted in the deaths of thirteen schoolchildren. The tragic incident occurred in Vanderbijlpark, south of Johannesburg, during the early hours of Monday morning.
According to local authorities, the crash happened around 07:00 local time when the minibus driver attempted to overtake two vehicles, leading to the fatal collision with the lorry. Eleven students died at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries later in hospital. Additionally, two more pupils remain in critical condition.
The spokesperson for the police, Mavela Masondo, confirmed that a case of culpable homicide would be initiated as investigations into the crash begin. The driver of the minibus is reportedly receiving treatment at a hospital, while the status of the lorry driver remains unclear.
Fatal road accidents are alarmingly frequent in South Africa, with speeding and reckless driving often cited as contributing factors, alongside poorly maintained vehicles. In 2025 alone, over 11,000 fatalities were recorded due to road collisions, underscoring the urgent need for improved road safety measures.
President Cyril Ramaphosa described the incident as distressing, stressing the necessity to prioritize the safety of children who are transported to and from school. He urged all stakeholders, including transport providers, to adhere to road safety regulations to protect the nation’s youth.
