One week out from the Sydney Marathon, organisers face questions about whether designers etched the wrong city's stadium on the participation medal.
The medal appears to feature Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany, instead of the Sydney-adapted Allianz Stadium that the course passes.
Contact was sought from the Sydney Marathon organisers, but no official comment has yet been released.
Over 40,000 runners will compete on 30 August after 120,000 ballot entries.
Speculation began after the event’s social media instagram unveiled the medal design, urging viewers to “look closely and you’ll find the story of the course in the details.”
The design shows a Sydney skyline, featuring the Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House, yet the stadium element misrepresents the location.
Munich’s Allianz Arena is sculpted by thousands of diamond-shaped inflatable cushions, while Sydney’s Allianz Stadium has a flatter façade with long bronze fins.
The medal’s other side features a gold and indigo pattern by First Nations artist Ambrose Killian; 42 half-round markings around the edge represent each kilometre of the course.
Killian stated he was not responsible for the other artwork.
A similar error happened last year at Great North Run where medals displayed the Sunderland and Wear River—non‑participating sites. Sydney’s 2026 event is part of the Abbott majors series, joining London, Berlin, Boston, Chicago, New York, Tokyo, with Cape Town adding next year.
