Sydney Daycare Worker Named After 329 Child Abuse Charges
Police revealed the identification of a Sydney childcare worker in the middle of an alarming abuse case. Hamish Tait, a 35‑year‑old who first appeared in court in July 2024, now faces 329 offences covering 136 alleged victims over a 16‑year period.
The charges against Tait include 162 counts of producing child abuse material and 81 counts of secretly filming a child in a private act without consent. Police have also identified 22 additional victims that are still pending confirmation, having reached out to 121 affected families to gather further details.
According to AFP Acting Commander Luke Needham, “Any form of child sexual abuse is confronting and horrific, especially when the perpetrator is entrusted with children’s care.” Tait had worked in 62 early‑childhood facilities between 2009 and 2025, mainly in Sydney’s north‑west, with alleged offences occurring at five sites, including a private childcare business.
The operation, named Operation Moonbi, created a dedicated website for families to identify affected centres and access support services.
At the centre of these revelations are a string of lawsuits across Australia: the 2024 confession of 307 offences by Ashley Griffith at Queensland childcare centres and the 2025 sexual‑abuse allegations against Joshua Brown, who faced dozens of charges at Victorian daycares.
The case underscores the urgent need for heightened scrutiny of childcare operations, safeguarding measures, and national child protection protocols.
