Sydney Marathon Medal Error: German Stadium Misprinted on Finishers’ Medals
The organisers of the Sydney Marathon took a light‑hearted approach after a small but noticeable design mistake slipped into this year’s finish‑line medals. What read on the back of the medal should have been a rendering of Sydney’s Allianz Stadium, but instead the image shows Munich’s Allianz Arena, a German football venue known for its marble façade and unique inflatable cushion design.
The error was first flagged when the event’s official social‑media account released a photo of the medal’s design earlier in the week. Participants and observers noticed that the stadium’s shape was wrong, prompting a wave of comments on platforms such as Instagram and Twitter.
Organiser’s Response
A spokesperson explained the mistake had been caused by “a little too much international flavour” and called it “an unfortunate error.” They added that the wrong stadium would still be handed to finishers, noting the medal would be “beautiful and now a little more unique.” The spokesperson also said it gave everyone something to chat about, framing the situation as a humorous anecdote.
Berlin’s Quick Reply
The German side did not stay silent: the Allianz Arena’s Instagram account joked that the venue was “not on our bingo card.” It added a playful comparison between the stadium, the Sydney Opera, unique architecture, and the universality of visiting both places.
The medal is double‑sided. The front bears iconic Sydney scenes, featuring the Harbour Bridge, the Opera House, and other landmarks that dot the 42.2‑km race route. The back showcases a gold and indigo pattern designed by First Nations artist Ambrose Killian, who confirmed he had not crafted the wrong stadium side.
With 40,000 athletes crossing the line on Saturday 30 August after a record 120,000 ballot entries, the event’s organisers praised participation levels and fundraising successes.
