NEW YORK (Reuters) — A violent incident unfolded at a prominent subway station in New York City on Saturday morning, leaving three individuals injured from stabbings and prompting police to shoot an armed suspect. According to the New York Police Department, the alarming events took place at the 42nd Street-Grand Central station following a 9:40 a.m. emergency call regarding the assault.

Upon their arrival, officers encountered a man wielding a knife on a station platform. In the confrontation that followed, law enforcement officers discharged their weapons, critically injuring the suspect. Details regarding the number of shots fired are still under investigation, but officials confirmed that he is currently in critical condition at a nearby hospital.

The stabbing victims, two males aged 84 and 65, and a 70-year-old female, were transported to the hospital where they are reported to be in stable condition. Additionally, two officers are undergoing evaluations for their exposure to the incident.

Authorities are still probing whether the stabbings originated on a train or the subway platform as investigations proceed. New York Governor Kathy Hochul expressed her gratitude on social media, commending the prompt actions of the police. We’re working closely with the NYPD as the investigation unfolds, she stated.

Due to the ongoing police investigation, officials advised travelers to avoid Grand Central Station while instructing that subway trains faced disruptions with some not stopping at the station. Commuters are urged to brace for delays and heavy traffic in the area as more details about the incident emerge.
