Seeking Answers: Mississippi Mother Demands Justice After Daughter's Fatal Hanging

On 3 August, Tasia Fortune, 29, was discovered hanging from a tree in an abandoned lot in Jackson. The funeral services soon followed, but the absence of an initial homicide ruling left families in limbo.

Christy Spivey, Fortune’s mother, reported to the BBC weeks after the discovery that she could not obtain any information on the investigation. “I’m still waiting for answers,” she said, describing the ongoing frustration with unanswered calls to police and federal agencies.

Police has only recently, on a Tuesday city‑wide meeting, confirmed that the case is being pursued as a potential homicide. Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney stated that a “high‑level inquiry” is underway while awaiting the medical examiner’s findings. The examiner’s office, however, has refrained from commenting on the pending case.

The incident echoes two prior deaths found in Mississippi earlier this year where bodies were also discovered hanged from trees. Both were ruled suicides, but the mothers of the deceased continue to question the conclusions, citing the state’s history of racial violence and recent spikes in petitions demanding independent investigations.

Local Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett has requested the Department of Justice to probe “possible cases of modern‑day lynchings” in Mississippi, underscoring the community’s fear of an ongoing cycle of violence. Meanwhile, Senator Kenneth Stokes has reached out to federal prosecutors and the FBI, urging assistance while noting the lack of response.

At a community level, students and residents across Jackson State University remain wary, with the university’s NAACP chapter president stressing a sense of vulnerability: “This is supposed to be the capital. We should feel safe here.”

The investigation remains unresolved, but the community’s petitions, which have amassed over 50,000 signatures, reflect a sustained call for immediate, transparent investigative action. The goal of all parties is clear: the truth about Tasia Fortune’s death and, ultimately, assurance of justice for all affected lives.
