Australian MP Helen Haines’s condition improves after alleged attack
The independent member for Wangaratta, 65, is now in a serious but stable state after emergency surgery forced the amputation of both legs in a violent incident on Monday.
Police say Haines was struck by a Toyota Land Cruiser driven by Brendan Nugent, a 43‑year‑old resident of the area, outside her electorate office. The vehicle slammed into her, crushing her lower limbs and leaving her in critical condition when she was air‑lifted to Alfred Hospital.
Nugent was detained shortly after the crash and has appeared in court on three counts: dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury and assaulting a Commonwealth public official. Prosecutors said further charges, possibly attempted murder, could be added as the case develops.
Police are investigating the attacker’s motive and whether drugs or medications may have contributed. "We have not yet established a clear motive," Victoria Police said. "The investigation remains open."
I’m grateful the medically most part is in good shape for my wife’s heart and mind,” said Haines’s husband, Phil.
The attack has renewed calls for calmer political debate. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on television that "there has been a rise in temperature – too much shouting, not enough discourse."
Haines had previously entered parliament in 2019 after a career in nursing and mid‑wifery, and is noted for championing stronger climate change action.
The ongoing investigation by Victoria Police in partnership with the Australian Federal Police will determine whether the incident was a targeted assault or a tragic accident.
Further updates will be provided as the legal process unfolds and authorities probe the underlying circumstances.
