A 68‑year‑old pétanque player died after being struck by a metal boule during a dispute in Mimizan, a French Atlantic resort.

The incident took place on 17 June as a heatwave swirled over the area. A beach‑based team requested to play in town in search of shade, sparking a heated exchange with a rival town group.

Witnesses say the man was hit by a steel ball that bounced off the ground and struck the head, leading to fatal injuries.

An 81‑year‑old man involved in the fracas has been arrested and is being held in custody by the Mont‑de‑Marsan prosecutor’s office.

Prosecutor Alexa Dubourg told the local paper Sud Ouest that “the evidence indicates that the 81‑year‑old struck the victim with a pétanque boule.” She added that the confrontation “degenerated into a physical confrontation.” Investigations continue to determine each attendee’s role.

Pétanque, a traditional French game, involves rolling steel balls as close as possible to a wooden target.

According to local radio station Ici Gascogne, the victim did not die instantly but collapsed minutes later after suffering a heart attack.

"There is a mega rivalry between the beach pétanque players and those in the town but I didn’t think it was that level," one resident told AFP news agency.

The incident underscores the need for better safety measures in communal sports settings, especially during hot weather.
