Luxury prison in Indonesia demolished after public outcry
The Cibinong Prison complex in Bogor province, near Jakarta, was taken down after citizens discovered it housed custom‑built luxury apartments used by some inmates.
Investigators reported that the units featured air‑conditioning, large flat‑screen televisions, refrigerators, sofas and dining rooms, alongside a gym, a golf simulator under construction and high‑end vehicles parked inside the compound.
While prison officials say the accommodations were intended for staff, the stark contrast between those facilities and the basic conditions elsewhere ignited a wave of protest, with people calling for comprehensive reform of Indonesia’s penal system.
The incident has once again spotlighted long‑standing allegations that wealth and political influence can secure preferential treatment for inmates through bribery.
