Intensified Russian drone and missile strikes are tearing Kyiv apart, the mayor of Ukraine's capital said.

Vitaliy Klitschko warned that the city was now in a "very dramatic situation" as Moscow bombed its critical infrastructure, logistics hubs, and housing.

The mayor spoke after Kyiv's defence council convened a crisis meeting following a new strike on the Pivdennyi Bridge, a key artery across the Dnipro River.

A second missive hit the same bridge overnight and the fourth in two days, halting all metro and automobile traffic and triggering widespread traffic jams.

Data centres had also been recently struck, causing nationwide internet outages.

Ukraine's state emergencies service DSNS said one resident died when a multi‑storey residential building was hit overnight.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia’s attacks aim to destroy bridges, data centres, and everyday life, forcing people to flee their cities.

Vice President Vladimir Putin, however, framed the strikes as a response to Ukraine's attacks on Russian oil refineries, claiming Moscow had lost about 1% of its GDP from Ukrainian retaliation.

Russia has stepped up attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure every winter since the 2022 invasion, seeking to cripple public and economic life.
