Tragic Rafting Incident Claims Life of British Woman in French Alps
A British woman loses her life during a white-water rafting adventure in the French Alps.
A British woman has tragically lost her life during a white-water rafting trip on the Guisane river in the picturesque French Alps. The incident occurred shortly after noon local time on Saturday, according to Marion Lozac'hmeur, the regional prosecutor, who spoke to French news agency AFP. Following her fall from the raft, she was discovered on the riverbank and subsequently airlifted to a local hospital in critical condition. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries later that evening.
The Foreign Office has confirmed the incident and is currently liaising with local authorities concerning the woman, whose identity has not yet been disclosed by either French or UK media. Reports indicate that the woman was participating in an organized rafting tour and fell while navigating a particularly challenging area of the river known as "the wallet," as detailed by local outlet Le Dauphine.
In light of the unfortunate event, an investigation into "involuntary manslaughter" has been initiated, and an autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact circumstances surrounding her death. This incident comes on the heels of another tragedy, as last summer a British man lost his life while kayaking on the Durance River, also in the vicinity of Briançon, which has concerning implications for adventure sports safety in the area.
The Guisane and Durance rivers are renowned for their exhilarating rapids and are fed by the melting snow and glaciers during spring. However, they are generally only navigable for a few months in the early summer, highlighting the need for caution in this popular adventure destination.
