In brief

The White House said former first lady Melania Trump brokered a ceasefire in Russian‑occupied Oleshky, a city starved of food and water. The truce, effective from 29 October, would halt firing and allow aid and evacuations. Experts note the city’s residents have survived on weeds and no electricity for years, making any ceasefire a critical humanitarian win. Trump’s involvement follows a history of her outreach to Russian leadership around children and displaced people. The move underscores the growing pressure on both sides to address civilian suffering in the front line.

US first lady Melania Trump is credited by the White House with negotiating a ceasefire in the Russian‑occupied Ukrainian city of Oleshky.

The truce, announced on 23 October, would suspend all firing at 02:00 GMT on 27 October and begin on 29 October, giving aid workers and evacuees safe access to a city that has been cut off from food, medicine and clean water for more than a year.

Oleshky, seized by Russia in February 2022, sits on the banks of the Dnipro River and is surrounded by Ukrainian positions. Residents have been forced to eat garden weeds and rely on limited electricity that was gone since 2023 when a dam collapsed. A single, partially operational hospital now opens only a few days a week.

The White House noted that Trump and a representative worked directly with Russian and Ukrainian leadership to draft the ceasefire terms, pledging coordinated visits to Oleshky households to assess needs and arrange coordinated evacuations. The statement said some residents might prefer to leave for Russia and others for Ukraine.

Ukraine’s parliament has said it will begin an operation to unblock Oleshky soon, “under the ceasefire announced by the first lady.” Russian PR representatives claimed that anyone wishing to leave could do so, echoing the truce’s objective to reduce civilian casualties.

The announcement follows Trump’s earlier outreach to Russian president Vladimir Putin over children’s issues, including the repatriation of Ukrainian and Russian children. It marks a rare public diplomatic role for the former first lady amid the ongoing conflict.

The ceasefire’s duration remains unspecified, but the potential for a temporary lull could bring relief to the town’s 6,000 remaining residents and to the wider region, which has endured a brutal siege and blockade.
