In brief
Ukraine's Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has expressed gratitude towards Elon Musk for successfully restricting Russian access to Starlink services, which were being utilized for drone strikes against Ukraine. The minister emphasized the importance of this intervention in light of several recent attacks attributed to Russian drones equipped with Starlink technology. Musk's quick response is praised as a vital measure in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
Elon Musk's efforts to prevent Russia from using Starlink satellites for drone attacks have 'delivered real results', a Ukrainian official stated. Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov praised Musk as 'a true champion of freedom', acknowledging his swift action in response to reports of Russian drones using Starlink for military operations. These drones have been linked to several deadly attacks, including one on a passenger train that resulted in six fatalities. Musk highlighted the effectiveness of the measures taken to restrict unauthorized use of Starlink, expressing willingness to assist further if necessary. The introduction of limitations on Starlink connectivity includes a speed cap on moving terminals, which is designed to hinder Russian operators from maintaining control over their drones in real-time. Despite Ukraine's previous dependence on Starlink for communication during the war, officials are now preparing to implement a whitelist of approved Starlink terminals to ensure that only registered devices can operate within the country.Amidst rising concerns among Russian military bloggers about potential broader implications of these restrictions, Fedorov emphasized the importance of collaboration with SpaceX for Ukraine’s defense strategy. As the conflict continues, Musk's relationship with Ukraine has experienced fluctuations, yet Fedorov maintains that Starlink has been crucial for sustaining the country's defense throughout the ongoing war.
