Two Casualties in Toronto Street Festival Shooting


A shooting during the annual Salsa on St Clair Latin festival in midtown Toronto left two people dead and six others injured with gunshot wounds.


Police received reports of an active shooter on St Clair Avenue at about 8:12 p.m. local time (1:12 a.m. BST). The scene, where musicians were performing and crowds were dancing, quickly became a disaster zone.


The responding officers found six victims with gunshot wounds. At the time of the report, two had been pronounced dead on the scene while the others were taken to hospitals.


Authorities secured the area and issued a warning for the public to stay away from the vicinity. A large police presence remains on St Clair, and the suspect or suspects have not yet been apprehended.


St Clair Avenue, a busy stretch lined with shops and restaurants, hosted the 22nd iteration of the Salsa on St Clair festival. The festival is a yearly celebration of Latin music and dance featuring live performances.
