Swiss Rave Shooting: Man Arrested After Woman Killed at Aarau Techno Festival
A 43-year-old Swiss man has been arrested after a shooting at a techno rave that killed an Italian 22-year-old and left five others wounded.
The incident took place at a horse‑racing track in Aarau, a town about 46 km west of Zurich. Festival organizers had expected 3,500 attendees and the local population of roughly 23,000 people was likely saturated by the event.
Small radio reports surfaced around 02:30 local time on Sunday when shots were heard over the clearing, initially mistaken for fireworks. The sound came after the music had ceased, which startled an eyewitness who recounted how the gunfire was felt minutes after the final song ended.
Maria Spinelli, an Italian national, died on the spot, while four men and a woman aged 24‑27 were hospitalized with injuries ranging from minor to severe. The incident prompted a six‑hour manhunt that culminated in the suspect’s capture before 01:00 local time on Monday.
Aarau cantonal police confirmed that the perpetrator acted alone and that investigators are looking into potential motives, background, and the exact order of events. No motive has been disclosed at this time.
A few hours after the shooting, Swiss authorities announced they had no leads on the suspect when the incident first broke. The swift arrest has marked a rapid shift in the ongoing investigation.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed confidence that Swiss authorities would “shed full light on what happened and find anyone responsible.” The Italian foreign ministry sent officials to Zurich to monitor the progress.
While gun ownership remains high in Switzerland, violent shootings are rare, and new tighter controls have been introduced in recent years. The country’s last major mass shooting occurred in 2001, when a gunman killed 14 members of the parliamentary and local government in Zug before taking his own life.
