British Man Charged in Singapore Two Years After Airport Theft

Singapore police have charged a 26‑year‑old British citizen for allegedly stealing a blue denim jacket from a retail store in Changi Airport’s shopping mall, more than two years after the incident took place.

The theft was uncovered on the evening of 14 August 2024 when a shop assistant realised the jacket was missing from a display mannequin. CCTV footage later revealed the suspect taking the jacket, valued at S$350 (£202), and leaving the premises without paying. By the time investigators established his identity, he had already departed Singapore.

The individual was arrested while in transit at Changi Airport on 15 August and formally charged on Tuesday. Singapore Police Force officials stressed that offenders must not assume they can evade detection simply by leaving the country, citing similar cases such as a 50‑year‑old Polish woman who stole two bottles of perfume and was also arrested before her departure.

The police highlighted that theft convictions in Singapore can carry up to seven years in jail, underscoring the strict legal stance on shoplifting.
