On March 24, 2026, LaGuardia Airport was the site of a tragic accident involving an Air Canada plane that crashed into a fire vehicle, resulting in the deaths of two young pilots, Antoine Forest and Mackenzie Gunther.
Local reports indicate that 30-year-old Forest hailed from Québec and Gunther was a recent graduate of Seneca Polytechnic in Toronto in 2023.
The crash occurred at 11:40 PM local time, injuring 41 individuals, some of whom required hospitalization, leading to the shutdown of the airport operations until Monday afternoon.
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) administrator Bran Bedford lamented, These were two young men at the start of their career, so it's an absolute tragedy that we're sitting here with their loss.
Forest had acquired flight skills in bush planes back in 2018 and began his career with Air Canada in December 2022. His great aunt expressed her sorrow and shared memories of his dedication to aviation, stating, He was always taking courses and flying... he flew his first plane at 16. Meanwhile, Gunther's alma mater announced that flags would be flown at half-mast in his memory, expressing its deepest condolences.
Among the lucky survivors was flight attendant Solange Tremblay, who miraculously survived ejection from the plane and was found over 300 feet away with fractures. Tremblay's daughter expressed her relief at her mother’s survival, calling it a complete miracle.
An investigation into the crash revealed critical failures in air traffic control communication, including a last-minute warning from controllers shortly before the incident. Concerns have been raised regarding the adequacy of current air traffic control systems, emphasizing the need for modernization to ensure safety.
The National Transportation Safety Board continues to investigate, facing pressing questions about staffing and operational protocols that could prevent future accidents.
