A Russian general has been killed in a car bombing in Moscow, officials have said.

Russia's Investigative Committee stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov died on Monday morning after an explosive device planted under a car detonated.

He is the third military official killed in bomb attacks in the capital over the last year.

Sarvarov, 56, was the head of the armed forces' operational training department, according to the committee.

Initial investigations suggest that the bomb might have been planted with the involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. Ukraine has not yet commented on this allegation.

Sarvarov succumbed to his injuries in a hospital, prompting an investigation into murder and illegal trafficking of explosives. Investigators have been dispatched to the scene, where a damaged white Kia Sorento was found, surrounded by other cars.

Russian media noted that Sarvarov had previously participated in combat operations during the Ossetian-Ingush conflict and the Chechen wars in the 1990s and early 2000s, and also led operations in Syria between 2015-2016.

President Vladimir Putin was promptly informed of Sarvarov's death, as confirmed by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

This incident follows a pattern of targeted attacks since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, with recent casualties including military officials like Gen Yaroslav Moskalik, who was killed in a car bomb attack last April, and Gen Igor Kirillov, who died in December 2024 due to a remotely detonated device.

A Ukrainian source reportedly stated that Kirillov was killed by Ukraine's security service, although this claim remains unverified. Ukraine maintains a policy of neither confirming nor denying involvement in such incidents.
