A sanctioned Russian tanker, the Arctic Metagaz, loaded with liquefied natural gas, is now adrift in the Mediterranean, prompting urgent warnings from Italian authorities about a potential ecological disaster. The vessel, which has suffered significant damage with a gaping hole on one side and no crew onboard, has been labeled an 'environmental bomb' by officials due to its substantial cargo of LNG and fuel oil.

The tanker was reportedly hit by a sea drone attack earlier this month near Maltese waters; however, Ukraine has not confirmed its involvement. As the vessel drifts further south towards Libya, it raises serious concerns of an explosion or leak, leading to widespread pollution in an ecologically sensitive area.

The Italian Secretary of the Council of Ministers, Alfredo Mantovano, emphasized the enormity of the risks associated with the tanker stating it could explode 'at any moment'. As it moves, officials from both Italy and Malta are vigilantly monitoring its trajectory, aware that a failure to address the situation could lead to devastating consequences for the marine environment.
