In brief

Germany has increased vigilance against Russian intelligence after arresting a Ukrainian national accused of collecting weapon and ammunition data for Russian agents. Chancellor Friedrich Merz highlighted that such cases demonstrate the steady threat of Russian operatives on German soil. Earlier arrests this year have targeted individuals tied to Russian intelligence and other foreign espionage activities. These security measures come as Germany remains a principal supplier of arms to Ukraine and confronts hybrid attacks on its infrastructure.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz says Russian intelligence activity in Germany remains ‘at a consistently high level’

Germany has heightened its security counter‑measures after detaining a Ukrainian national suspected of provisioning military‑related data to Russian intelligence services.

The suspect, referred to in court documents as Vadym Y., allegedly communicated with a Russian agency through an intermediary since at least July 2025. He is reported to have collected information on armoured vehicle production, ammunition manufacturing, and explosives handling.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz declared the arrest a “success” but cautioned that Russian intelligence operations in Germany remain at a consistently high level. He warned that additional cases could arise in the months ahead.

Earlier this year, arrests targeted a Berlin woman linked to a Russian embassy officer, a Romanian woman, and a Ukrainian man who allegedly spied on a supplier of drones to Ukraine. The Federal Prosecutor General’s Office highlighted the pattern of foreign espionage on German soil.

In a separate event, former BND chief August Hanning was detained on suspicion of espionage and treason, accused of passing classified documents for a foreign power. His former aide, Manfred D., was also arrested for providing Hanning roughly 2,000 top‑secret files in exchange for money.

Merz reiterated Germany’s defence partnership with the United Kingdom, emphasizing joint efforts against hybrid attacks and hostile activity. He referenced the recent incident where a drone fitted with explosives was allegedly launched at Leipzig/Halle Airport, an event that Russia denied and Germany accused of false evidence planting.
