A gunman was killed and two were injured in a shootout near the Israeli consulate in Istanbul, which Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called a heinous act of terror. Two policemen were slightly injured in the gun fight, Turkish Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci said. Ciftci reported that the attackers had arrived in Istanbul from Izmit by rental car, with two of them being identified as brothers. The deceased gunman, named Yunus E.S., was said to be connected to a terrorist organization exploiting religion, presumably referencing the Islamic State, although no group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Erdogan assured that Turkey would not allow the trust in the nation to be undermined by such provocations. Initial reports indicated that two attackers had died, but a clarification was made that only one was killed. The injured attackers have been identified as Onur Ç and Enes Ç, who are also brothers. The condition of the injured police officers is reported to be stable. Additionally, evidence of significant digital communication among the attackers has been detected, prompting further investigations. Eyewitnesses recounted the intensity of the gunfire during the daylight incident, which lasted for 15-20 minutes. Following the assault, a heavy police presence was observed around the consulate, which has been devoid of Israeli diplomats for over two years amid strained bilateral relations due to conflicts in Gaza. The justice minister announced that an investigation into the shooting has been initiated.
