PORTERVILLE, Calif. — A tragic incident unfolded in Porterville, California, on Thursday morning when a man shot and killed a sheriff’s deputy as deputies attempted to serve an eviction notice. The situation escalated into a standoff that lasted several hours, culminating in the gunman’s death when he was struck by an armored vehicle from a nearby SWAT team.

The incident began when Tulare County deputies attempted to serve an eviction notice to a 60-year-old man, identified as the shooter. Upon their arrival, he opened fire with a rifle, fatally wounding Detective Randy Hoppert, who was responding to assist fellow officers. Hoppert was a Navy veteran who had been a member of the sheriff’s department since 2020.

Following the shooting, the gunman barricaded himself inside the residence, and law enforcement initiated a tense standoff. Authorities deployed gas into the home to coax him out, but the gunman continued to fire at officers. The situation significantly heightened security in the area, prompting the evacuation of several nearby residences and lockdowns in local schools.

Eventually, the gunman exited his home and fled through the yards of neighboring residences. SWAT teams approached, and in a tragic turn of events, the armored vehicle struck and killed him after he fired at the approaching officers.

The deceased gunman had reportedly been behind on rent for 35 days and had anticipated the arrival of law enforcement to serve his final eviction notice. Sheriff Mike Boudreaux described the incident as senseless, emphasizing the loss experienced by the department and the community.

Witnesses recounted the harrowing experience of witnessing the police response in what is normally a peaceful neighborhood. Residents expressed gratitude for the communication and support provided by law enforcement throughout the ordeal.
