A gunman was killed and two were injured in a shootout near the Israeli consulate in Istanbul. Two policemen were 'slightly injured' in the gun fight, according to Turkish Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci. The attackers had traveled to Istanbul from the city of Izmit by rental car, with two of the attackers identified as brothers. The ministry named the deceased gunman as Yunus E.S., connected to a terrorist organization that exploits religion, likely referring to the Islamic State group, though no group has officially claimed responsibility for the attack.
Initial reports suggested that two attackers had died; however, local governor Davut Gul clarified that only one had been killed. The two injured attackers, Onur Ç and Enes Ç, are also brothers. The police officers involved were not in life-threatening condition, sustaining injuries to the leg and ear.
'Intensive digital communication has been detected among the three neutralised terrorists, and the interrogation of the injured terrorists continues,' the ministry stated. The attackers used rifles and pistols during the assault, with video evidence capturing the bold attack in broad daylight.
Witnesses described the gunfire as loud and persistent, continuing for 15-20 minutes. It was reported that no Israeli diplomatic personnel were present at the consulate, which is located in Istanbul's main business district in the Besiktas area, as it has been unstaffed for over two years due to strained relations between Turkey and Israel.
An investigation into the attack is currently underway.
