NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Dalton Eatherly, aged 28 and known on social media by the derogatory handle 'Chud the Builder,' has been charged with attempted murder following a violent altercation at the Montgomery County Courthouse. The incident occurred in broad daylight, leading to the shooting of another individual, who required emergency surgery and is now in stable condition.
According to an affidavit, the altercation escalated rapidly after Eatherly displayed what was described as a 'bladed stance' before drawing his weapon from his jacket. Witnesses reported that the controversial figure opened fire, hitting the victim multiple times while also wounding himself in the arm during the fracas.
The shooting took place in the presence of several bystanders, heightening concerns about public safety. Surveillance footage captured the chaotic scene, including audio records suggesting imminent danger from ricocheting bullets. In response, the Montgomery County Court set Eatherly's bond at $1.25 million during an arraignment, reflecting the gravity of the incident.
Eatherly's legal troubles extend beyond this shooting; he is also facing related charges, including employing a firearm during a dangerous felony, aggravated assault, and reckless endangerment. He was previously out on bond in two other cases, including a November harassment charge.
In a significant twist, Eatherly's social media presence centers around provocative, racially charged content aimed at instigating confrontations with members of the Black community. Although the race of the victim has not been officially confirmed by authorities, witness descriptions indicate that he is Black.
Eatherly is currently in custody at the Montgomery County jail, with a full bond hearing scheduled for next week, and preliminary hearings set for later this month. Legal experts and community leaders are closely monitoring the case, which raises troubling questions about hate speech, public safety, and the legal system's handling of individuals with histories of racial provocation.
