Bystanders in Texas Rescue Passengers from Flaming Jet Crash
A private jet on its way from Los Cabos, Mexico, to Austin, Texas, suffered serious mechanical problems and crashed onto a busy freeway near Laredo. The jet burned intensely, sending thick smoke and flames across the road.
Local bystanders, armed only with a shovel and a sledgehammer, arrived in a matter of minutes and opened a door to pull five passengers out. The rescue effort was documented on video, with bystanders forming a human chain and using makeshift tools to pry the plane apart.
First responders arrived shortly after. One person aboard the jet died before emergency services could reach them. The five survivors were transported to nearby hospitals and are reported to be in stable condition. A second survivor was declared deceased. Details of the fatality remain under investigation.
The crash took place 240 kilometres southwest of San Antonio, on Loop 20, a major highway that was shut down as the National Transportation Safety Board and the FBI began their inquiry. Authorities are examining the mechanical failure that caused the jet to lose flight control. The incident is expected to keep the roadway closed through Wednesday to facilitate a full investigation.
One vehicle was struck by the aircraft during the accident, though investigators have yet to determine which part of the plane collided with the vehicle. Five first responders received smoke inhalation treatment from a field medical team.
