An Indian Pilgrim’s Dream Turns into a Mystery amid Himalayan Floods


Subhrasree Chakraborty, 43, was an Indian medical technologist who had long dreamed of visiting Mount
Kailash, the sacred Himalayan home of Hindu god Shiva. On 25 August, she departed Kathmandu with a group of
about 30 pilgrims, hoping to cross the Nepal–Tibet border and continue her pilgrimage. The next day, at 08:03
local time, she sent her husband, Sudipto Bhattacharya, a WhatsApp message stating that the group was
waiting to enter China. The messages then stopped abruptly.


Sudipto received the last of Subhrasree’s contact a week after the flight and quickly realized that
something had gone wrong. He had no further updates from her, even after attempting to reach the tour
operator and the two managers who were accompanying the group.


In the early hours of 26 August, a sudden flash flood struck the border region, sweeping across the
province of Nuwakot and flood‑elevating numerous villages that had previously faced no such threat. By
mid‑afternoon the flood had taken several lives and left numerous people missing. At least 290 Indians
reported missing, including 70 from the pilgrimage group that Subhrasree was part of. The official list
of missing foreigners published by the Nepal government includes Subhrasree’s name among 537 missing.


Subhrasree’s family, especially her husband, has been left to question whether your wife
crossed into Chinese territory before the flood struck. None of the authorities in either country have
released any information to confirm her status and no one from the group has provided any further
details. The absence of GPS data, cell‑tower activity, or witness accounts has turned the investigation
into a “search‑and‑hope” dilemma.


In addition to Subhrasree’s disappearance, an unrelated private tutor from Kolkata, Rina
Banerjee – who travelled alone with the same group – also found herself lost in the chaos. Rina’s
family is uncertain whether she crossed the border or was trapped by the flood on the Nepal side.
Both women’s shared dream of adventure now culminates in unanswered questions, as their families wait
for proof of their whereabouts.


The tragedy has exposed systemic weaknesses in disaster response: a lack of real‑time tracking
for migrants crossing the border and limited coordination between Nepalese, Indian, and Chinese
authorities. Border‑area disaster management relies on manual data gathering and after‑the‑event
reporting, which often puts families months to years before they know the outcome.
